Updated: Apr 8

In the great green room

There was a telephone

And a red balloon

And a picture of – The new Goodnight Moon stamps!

On Friday, May 2, 2025 The Rabbit hOle is honored to host the unveiling and first-day-of-issue festivities for the United States Postal Service’s Goodnight Moon Commemorative Forever® Stamps.

We invite everyone to celebrate with us Friday, May 2 from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. With regular museum admission, visitors can see and take pictures with large versions of the newly unveiled stamps, purchase stamps from the USPS, decorate and send your own postcard, design your own dream stamp, and enjoy readings of Goodnight Moon from special guest Thacher Hurd.

Thacher is a children’s book creator (Art Dog, Mama Don’t Allow) and the son of Goodnight Moon illustrator Clement Hurd.

"My father always seemed bemused by the success of Goodnight Moon. Though he did many books with Margaret, somehow that one became their great achievement,” said Thacher. “No one seemed to pay attention to it when it was published, but how it has grown and become a beloved bedtime ritual.”

Since its initial publication more than 75 years ago, Goodnight Moon written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide and become a childhood staple.

Tucked in The Rabbit hOle’s bookstore, Lucky Rabbit Books, is an oversized version of the Great Green Room, where visitors climb into bed, sit in the rocking chair, and say goodnight to all the familiar furnishings.

“Our team of designers and artists went to extraordinary lengths to bring Goodnight Moon to life,” said Rabbit hOle co-director Pete Cowdin. “And watching people be transported back to memories of sharing that book with their parents or their own children, you can see the power it has.”

The Goodnight Moon stamp is the latest to feature a work of children’s literature. In the last decade, USPS has also created stamps honoring The Snowy Day written and illustrated by Jack Ezra Keats, The Giving Tree written and illustrated by Shel Silverstein, Strega Nona written and illustrated by Tomie DePaola.

“We’re excited to celebrate this historic occasion with Thacher and his family, the United States Postal Service, and Goodnight Moon fans of all ages,” said Rabbit hOle co-director Deb Pettid. “Don’t forget to enjoy a bowl of mush from our cafe while you’re here.”
